How to Choose 2D OR 3D AOI?

Should you choose AOI all at once, buy 3D right away, or start with 2D and upgrade later?

There’s no definitive answer to this question. We generally advise clients to prioritize product quality requirements; suitability is paramount.

For example, we’ve worked with clients in lighting and smart home motherboards. Their production lines assemble standard electronic components with relatively simple structures and mature production processes.

After analysis by our technical team and demonstrations of our equipment, they’ve opted to initially use 2D AOI as a standard inspection solution. For example, our A216 series, equipped with 12MP and 5MP cameras and RGBWR tower lighting, primarily targets R-dimensional defects such as offset, missing limits, and missing appearance.

We achieve defect detection efficiency of 0.25 seconds per field of view (FOV), allowing first-article testing to be completed in 10 minutes, significantly reducing employee training costs. Furthermore, the standard offline programming software enables seamless line changeovers and supports on-the-fly testing and adjustment, ensuring production line efficiency.

Of course, when we encounter certain products with high-tech requirements, if they involve three-dimensional issues such as floating height, solder joints, volume, and docking structures, 2D AOI does have some limitations.

In these cases, we usually introduce 3D AOI  A316 serial as a supplement. A common method used by industry customers is to use 2D before reflow soldering and 3D after reflow soldering. This can not only control production costs but also ensure the best inspection results. Everyone knows that our 3D AOI is undoubtedly smarter and more accurate, and can detect all defects in a first-level inspection.

However, we still recommend that you choose the most suitable, stable, and easy-to-implement solution based on your current product structure, production line structure, and switching frequency.
